What you should know about Wilderness Expeditions

Rock Climbing in Devonport

Wilderness Expeditions (Pty Ltd) offer guided walking holidays and support for expeditions exploring the national parks and wild areas of Tasmania. Services include guided group and private tours, consultation and training, transport charters and self-guided /hire equipment packages.

The Overland Track From Cradle Mountain in Tasmania’s central northwest The Overland Track winds its way 65kms south to Leeawuleena /Lake St Clair. Along the way it passes through some ever-changing and truly spectacular landscapes including vast sub-alpine moors and dramatic mountain passes, dense mossy rainforest and majestic woodlands. Surrounded by jagged ranges, with a chance to climb Tasmania’s highest peak (Mt Ossa) and ending with on Australia’s deepest, arguably most scenic natural lake. It’s easy to see what draws people from around the world to experience this journey.

Cradle Mountain
Cradle Mountain needs little introduction, it is a highlight any Tasmanian holiday and the most visited natural attraction in the state. Many venture little further than Dove Lake or surrounding plateau.

Walls of Jerusalem The Walls of Jerusalem comprise a central basin of lakes and tarns, grassy meadows and ancient stands of endemic flora surrounded by jagged peaks all set on the edge of Tasmania’s high central plateau. An artist couldn’t imagine a more perfect panorama of alpine beauty. Whether cloaked in winter snows and explored on snowshoes or carpeted in summer bloom with time to stroll, a visit to the walls is a truly memorable experience.

Frenchmans Cap
Sentinal of Tasmania’s southwest wilderness, Frenchmans Cap dominates a wild landscape of pristine lakes and impossibly jagged peaks.  At 1446m ‘The Cap’ towers above the iconic Franklin River (crossed on the first/last day) and offers up extensive views of some of Tasmania’s most remote wilderness. In itself, with its quartzite bulk and sheer eastern face it is quite simply, awesome!

South Coast
Our South Coast Track is truly an ‘expedition’.  A spectacular flight from Hobart and over the route begins a real appreciation of this wild and remote wilderness.  Our walk departs from historic Melaleuca Inlet (on Bathurst Harbour). Over the next nine days from here, 80km to Cockle Creek, we traverse an amazing variety of landscapes. White sandy beaches, rainforests and mountain streams as well as sub-alpine, perhaps snow covered heath to an altitude of over 1000 meters. The route has a rich history of both traditional and colonial influence and passing through an array of habitats with rare and unusual flora and fauna the journey is a real ‘immersion’.

Wilder Walks
We operate under permits to allow access to all Tasmania’s national parks and other publicly reserved lands. As such we can organise walks into some of the most remote ‘back-country’. While including some very popular tracks and routes, some of these areas are quite environmentally fragile. In alignment with the park service walking track strategy, we do not promote such walks through direct commercial advertising.
Wilderness Expeditions Pt Ltd is a locally owned private company founded in 2007, an association between several longstanding guides and industry professionals. We initially filled a niche for six day itineraries on the Overland Track and have since expanded our services, pioneering winter snowshoe treks to abundant locations, exploring more isolated routes and maximum recently (since 2013) adding self guided’ options for popular tracks. Our Tours We give a comprehensive service allowing you to fair focus on making the most your time. Experienced guides, modern lightweight gear and wholesome meals as well as meticulous planning and support. These are by far the easiest lightest feasible option for well trodden popular walks but also make access to more remote locations much simpler in the planning, enjoying the holiday without the (what can be) weeks of planning. Our Tour Leaders Guides are chosen for their aptitude to provide a safe, fulfilling and enjoyable experience. As well as having a difficult base of outdoor skills and an affinity with Tasmania’s natural environment, we
